Men need testosterone for sexual maturation; women require it for system regulation.

In men testosterone is required for:

  • Sexual changes during puberty such as: the testes growing, pubic and bodily hair developing, muscle and bone growth, the voice deepening.
  • Muscle size and strength in adults.
  • Bone strength in adults.
  • Sex drive.
  • Sperm production.

If normal stages of sexual development do not occur during puberty, it may be a sign that inadequate levels or no testosterone is being produced, a condition known as male hypogonadism.

This can occur as a result of a genetic defect, injury or another illness or may be due to abnormal hormonal stimulation from another gland such as the pituitary gland. The condition can also occur in adult men. Treatment for the condition depends of the cause and involves hormone-based therapy.

As men age testosterone levels may also decline, leading to the loss of muscle strength, an increase in bodily fat and a decrease in libido. Women with low levels of testosterone may experience low sexual desire, a decrease in bone strength and poor concentration and depression.
